How to harness the benefits of digitalization


Digitalization is playing an increasingly important role in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The opinions surrounding digitalization oscillate between progressive optimism and skepticism. Many companies are facing the question as to how they can benefit from the (not only) technical developments.

Driven by this question, UP Research surveyed the current status of the digitalization of business processes and communication in SMEs in January and February 2017. Special attention was paid to the aspects digital workplace and digital information exchange in companies.

The analysis of this study presents the results of the online survey and derives specific recommendations for action from this.

The digitalization study answers the following questions:

  • What are the goals of digitalization in SMEs?
  • Which departments are primarily addressing digitalization?
  • How are companies specifically approaching digitalization projects?

It’s not about digitalizing the workplace. It’s not even about digitalizing the work. It’s much more about improving the provision and availability of information, increasing the quality and speed of the modelling of business processes and putting people in a position to make better decisions and to interact with colleagues or third-parties to achieve this.
